Glide into Grandeur Exploring Kotor Cable Car, Montenegro

Anđela Laković - Jul 26, 2024

The Kotor Cable Car is not just a marvel of modern engineering but a testament to visionary investment. This project is a shining example of how thoughtful infrastructure can enhance the appeal of an already captivating destination. The Kotor Cable Car is much more than a tourist attraction – it is a special experience that, in an 11-minute ride, will bring you closer to the unique beauty of Montenegro, proving why this magical Mediterranean country is said to be the most beautiful meeting place of land and sea.

The length of the cable car is 3,900 meters, with an elevation difference of 1,316 meters. The ride lasts 11 minutes in one direction, and the maximum speed is 8km per hour. The system includes 48 gondolas, each capable of accommodating 10 passengers, with a total capacity to transport 1,200 passengers per hour. The gondolas offer a 360° view with high-transparency protective glass. You can reach the cable car via the Lower Station Dub, only 200 meters from the Budva-Tivat road, near the Vrmac tunnel close to Kotor. If you are coming from the direction of Cetinje and the Lovćen National Park, you will start your ride at the Upper Station Kuk.

The consortium Novi Volvox – Leitner Ropeways implemented this significant tourist infrastructure project. Leitner Ropeways, an Italian company founded in 1888, is a leading global producer and installer of ropeway transport systems. Known for its expertise in designing and constructing of some of the world’s most iconic cable cars, Leitner Ropeways’ involvement ensures that the Kotor Cable Car meets the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and comfort. Novi Volvox is one of the leading construction companies in the dynamic Montenegrin market when it comes to the execution of demanding and attractive projects.

The Kotor Cable Car is a symbol of connecting the natural beauties of Montenegro, to all those who work on promoting the country’s tourism and contributing to its economic development. It is a privilege to be at a location that offers a view of one of the most beautiful bays in the world and to witness how the Kotor Cable Car is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable tourist attractions on the Adriatic and beyond,” said Martin Leitner, the President of the Board of Directors of the Kotor Cable Car.

He also emphasized that all aspects of the project have been implemented in a way to preserve the environment and special attention was given to areas that are part of the Lovćen National Park. Moreover, the cable car provides an alternative to road travel, reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional transportation methods. This aligns with Montenegro’s broader goals of promoting sustainable tourism and protecting its rich natural heritage. Additionally, a gradual transition to predominantly using energy from renewable sources has been announced, confirming thus a commitment to upholding the principles of sustainability and environmental protection.

The route that connects the sea and mountains, making Lovćen National Park accessible from Kotor in just 11 minutes, offers a view from the gondolas of an area of unique natural beauty, from Jaz Beach to the small peninsula of Prevlaka. The possibility of touring Kotor, Cetinje, and exploring the Lovćen National Park with all its landmarks in just one day, thanks to the cable car, is a unique experience recognized by visitors from all around the world.

As the ride starts from the Lower Station Dub, the sleek, glass-enclosed cabins offer a panoramic view that seamlessly transitions from the historic charm of Kotor to the pristine wilderness of the mountains. As the cable car ascends, passengers are gradually lifted above the rooftops of Kotor, gaining a bird’s-eye view of the medieval town and its ancient city walls. The bay, with its deep blue waters and scattered islands, unfolds below, showcasing the view that has inspired poets, artists, and travellers for centuries.

Higher up, as the air becomes crispier, the landscape transforms into a lush tapestry of green forests and rugged mountains. This transition from sea to mountains showcases the diverse beauty of Montenegro, a country of breathtaking dramatic sceneries.

The journey culminates at the Upper Station Kuk, located in the picturesque area known as Njeguši. This region is not only known for its stunning views but also for its cultural and historical significance as the birthplace of the Petrović dynasty, which ruled Montenegro for over two centuries. Throughout this region, you can still find examples of traditional architecture.

At the upper station, where the gondolas gently arrive after their scenic ascent, awaits a world of experiences that cater to every visitor, ensuring a memorable stay. You can experience the stay in the restaurants and bars, which offer not just delectable local and international cuisine, but also unparalleled views of the ever-changing colours of the Adriatic Sea and the majestic mountains.

For those who prefer spending time actively, the upper station is a gateway to a variety of outdoor activities. Passengers can explore hiking trails and viewpoints, which guarantee encounters with Montenegro’s rich biodiversity and stunning natural beauty. Cycling enthusiasts will find themselves in paradise, whether they prefer mountain biking or leisurely rides along scenic paths.

For thrill-seekers and those looking to add an extra dash of excitement to their visit, the Visa Alpine Coaster awaits. The Visa Alpine Coaster is a 1 km long track with an altitude difference of 80 meters, which allows you to experience an adrenaline rush as you descend at speeds up to 40 km/h. As the only attraction of its kind in Montenegro, this exhilarating ride offers a thrilling descent down winding tracks that weave through the mountainside.

The upper station of the Kotor Cable Car complex is also a cultural hub, in addition to being a starting point for outdoor activities. Discover local heritage through exhibitions and cultural events that showcase Montenegro’s rich history and traditions. Engage with artisans crafting traditional goods, or simply relax in the serene surroundings, taking in the peaceful ambiance that permeates this mountaintop retreat.
